The court said it did not have jurisdiction to hear the case since the wreck occurred in international waters, Reuters reports
Charges against nine Egyptians accused of being traffickers in the deadly 2023 shipwreck off Pylos were dropped as the court said it did not have jurisdiction to hear the case as the shipwreck occurred in international waters, Reuters reports.
The 9 Egyptians, aged between 21 and 41, were arrested a few hours after the shipwreck and have since remained in custody, charged with smuggling migrants, causing a shipwreck and being part of a criminal organisation. It is noted that they denied every accusation.
It is reminded that at least 82 people died in the wreck, over 100 were rescued while approx 800 people it seems they were on the fishing boat.
The court’s decision was met with cheers from the crowd, which had gathered since early morning. Earlier, tension arose between MAT and the PAME block which resulted in the injury of two people, while 3 arrests were made. Tension was also noted with the former Minister and executive of the New Left Theodoros Dritsa whom the police forces together with other demonstrators did not let them pass to the courts.
