The new Evinos bridge, built by TERNA, is now available to residents and visitors, restoring the connection between Messolonghi and Nafpaktos at the height of Evinochori, on the old Antirrio-Ioannina National Highway.

The new Evinos bridge has a total length of 242.7 meters and a total width of 13.5 meters (including the sidewalks), while its deck is 7.5 meters wide. It has been built with the most modern specifications and having taken special care for the special conditions that prevail in the area.

It is recalled that from December 2021 the pre-existing Evinos bridge (built in the mid-1960s) had suffered irreparable damage due to flood phenomena and could not be used. In the interim period and until the completion of the construction of the new Evinos bridge, traffic was carried out through a temporary crossing within the river bed and was interrupted when the water level of the Evinos rose.

“The new Evinos bridge is part of a set of projects carried out in the area with the aim of flood protection and includes all the necessary hydraulic works to protect the piers and the arrangement of the river, as well as the works of temporary restoration of the road connection and arrangement of all kinds of pipelines and networks on the damaged bridge. For the hydraulic protection of the bridge from the torrential operation of the river, interventions are made on the banks and the river bed in a length of 580 meters upstream and 500 meters downstream, with protective embankments and guiding walls made of reinforced concrete, while at a distance of 250 meters downstream a 242-meter-long embankment is constructed meters and a height of 6 meters for the creation of a basin of calmness and control of the waters to deal with the phenomena of extreme weather conditions” is stated in a related announcement of TERNA S.A.
