: Dozens of people died in summer heat wave, nearly 25,000 people fell ill, according to media
The unusually severe heat wave that swept through India this summer is suspected to have killed more than 100 people and sickened tens of thousands more, authorities and media reported, as parts of the country were also recently hit by a cyclone and heavy rains.
The unbearable temperatures, which started in March, reached 50 degrees Celsius in the capital Delhi and the neighboring state Rajasthan in May due to a number of factors, a trend that scientists say has been exacerbated by human-induced climate change.
At least 30 people died of heatstroke in the eastern state of Odisha this summer, the state’s disaster management authority said today, adding that another 97 suspected sunstroke deaths were being investigated.
Nearly 25,000 people appear to have suffered heatstroke during India’s summer season, which runs from March to May, news website ThePrint reported citing government figures, with incidents peaking in May.
At the same time, more than twice as many heatwave days were recorded in north-west and east India than usual for the time, mainly because there were fewer non-monsoon storms and warm winds blowing from arid neighboring areas towards the India.
Deaths were also reported in northern and western parts of India, where a heat wave was particularly severe last month during national elections, with taps running dry in Delhi and livestock collapsing in fields.
In contrast, parts of eastern India were reeling from the impact of Cyclone Remal, with torrential rains in the northeastern state of Assam killing 14 people since Tuesday.
