A bear weighing more than 300 kg collided with a car on Saturday night 6/15 on the Kastoria-Nestoriou Provincial Road.

The collision did not injure any of the passengers of the car, despite the serious damage suffered by the vehicle, but the large animal, estimated to be an adult, about eight years old, was fatally injured.

The Forestry Department of Kastoria notified about the incident the officers of the Environmental Organization “Kallisto”, who were at the scene, as part of the participation of “Kallisto” in the institutionalized Immediate Intervention Team.

As it turned out, the adult bear walked 100 meters from the scene of the traffic collision, where it ended up suffering from internal bleeding. The dead animal was then moved and buried in a suitable place, under the care of the Forestry Service of Kastoria.

The environmental organization reports that in sections of the provincial road, where the accident occurred, drivers very often exceed the speed limit in violation of the Code of Conduct.

“Road accidents with bears and other species of wild animals unfortunately happen quite often on roads that pass through areas that are also a natural habitat. Increased vehicular traffic during the summer, combined with the more frequent movement of bears at this time due to intensive foraging, necessitates the attention of all of us”, it is pointed out in its announcement and appeals to drivers who move in places that are bear habitat to be extremely careful and always respect the speed limit, especially when driving at night or in the early hours of the morning, and to pay the necessary attention to warning signs posted.
