A stone’s throw from Athens, in Keratea Attica there is a beach with crystal clear, deep, blue waters and… a deterrent name.

Kaki Thalassa – although it does not resemble a beach in Attica – is a pole of attraction for Athenians, who – especially on weekends – flock to enjoy their swim.

The crowds can be really off-putting – but a dip in the Bad Sea is really worth it.

The beach is divided into two parts.

Its southern part is relatively well organized with facilities for resting and sunbathing, i.e. sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and changing rooms. Its northern part is unorganized, to put your umbrella and spread your towel for free.

Why Bad Sea?

According to Greek mythology when the barbarians attacked Greece, Zeus and Hades dragged the shores so they could talk and left the sea water in between. As the Greeks were very few in number, Zeus and Hades helped them by asking Poseidon to send there waves bigger than the ships of the barbarians. Since then it is said that even Hades defended the Greeks. Since then the sea in the area of Keratea has been called the Bad Sea.
