Firefighters are battling the big fire that broke out early in the afternoon in Serifos throughout the night.

The fire started from low vegetation and due to the strongest winds, which at this time reach up to 10 Beaufort in the area, spread rapidly with the direction of the fire front changing, according to the fire department, at regular intervals.

The “fiery inferno” quickly spread to a rocky area on the mountain and threatened residential areas with 112 sending three messages to evacuate settlements to citizens.

In particular, at 21:01 a message was sent that says: “Fire in Serifos. If you are in the areas of Ramos, Livadakia, Karavi, move away towards Livadi.”

Earlier at 19:34 a message was sent to those in the areas of Koutalas, Ganema, Vaya, Kalo Ambeli with the instruction to head towards Chora tis Serifos via Koutalas.

The first 112 message was sent at 18:29 and said: “Fire in Serifos. If you are in the areas of Ramos and Livadi, move away towards Serifos”.

At the scene, after 4 firefighters with 1 vehicle and municipal water tankers tried.

Then, air assets were increased and 2 aircraft and 1 helicopter made water drops.

As the air assets withdrew at sunset, ground forces were reinforced with 3 vehicles and seven firefighters rushing from Syros.

At the same time, fire brigades from Athens, namely 22 firefighters with 11 vehicles, are moving.

Speaking to Sky, the mayor of Serifos, Konstantinos Revinthis, spoke of a difficult and large fire front.
