The goal is for young people up to the age of 39 to stay on the island
Interest free loan, amounting to 220,000 euros, for the young people who wish to remain on the island and proceed with house repairs, requests the Ministry of National Economy & Finance, the mayor of Megistis, Nikos Asvestis.
In particular, in a letter sent to the competent minister, Kostis Hatzidakis, which it also communicates to President of the Republic, to the Prime Minister of the country, and to the Members of Parliament, explains that as a municipality it wishes to support young people, up to the age of 39, so that they can stay on their island and avoid leaving it.
One way is to provide interest-free loans, so that these young people can contribute to the reconstruction of the island, since, as he says, there are no old buildings for sale, while building new ones is very expensive.
In detail, the letter of the mayor, Nikos Asvesti:
“As you know, our municipality is inhabited by only 584 residents, including conscripts, foreigners, Security Forces. The majority of permanent residents do not exceed 200 people during the winter season and are mainly made up of elderly people. In addition, the younger population group amounts to a much smaller percentage of the total population.
For this reason, we wish to provide a financial incentive to young people up to 39 years of age to stay on the island and avoid its abandonment by the permanent residents, with the ultimate goal of its future development.
In particular, we wish the younger population groups to have the possibility to receive an interest-free loan, amounting to €220,000.00, for the reconstruction of the island, as we must take into account that there are no old buildings for sale and most are newly built, with a large construction costs, due to the exorbitant prices of transport and materials.
Yours sincerely
Mayor Megistis,
Nikolaos Lime”.
