He passed away honorary Curator of Antiquities, Michalis Andrianakisdedicated to the protection and promotion of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of Crete.

Informed of the loss of Michalis Andrianakis, the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni made the following statement: “It was with great pain that I learned of the loss of the Honorary Curator of Antiquities, Michalis Andrianakis. Michalis was a reputable scientist, a dedicated public servant, an active citizen and, for me personally, an excellent Collaborator and friend, Michalis Andrianakis dedicated himself to the protection and promotion of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of Crete, with a wide range of work in the Archaeological Service, the culmination of which was the directorship of the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, but also, subsequently, as President of the Scientific Committee for the Promotion of Fortifications of Crete, he had a unique contribution to the protection, restoration and promotion of the Venetian fortresses of Crete, as well as the building stock of the old city of Chania project highlighting the unique fortifications of Chania, the implementation of which gives another dimension to the image of the city, highlighting its enormous wealth. In our last communication, a few weeks ago, he was talking to me about how, in his opinion, Izzedin should be promoted. Michalis Andrianakis was a concerned citizen, with informed opinions, with which we may not always agree, but we had to counter with equally strong arguments. He defended the necessity of the participation of the local community in the promotion of the cultural heritage and did not hesitate to publicly express his opinions. Michalis Andrianakis left prematurely, he still had a lot to give. To his family, I extend my sincerest condolences.”
