The former MEP refutes the publication, stressing that “at this time, no criminal charges have been brought against him”.
In the last few hours, a publication of the Journal of the Editors has been making the rounds on the internet, stating that the Brussels Prosecutor has recommended the initiation of criminal prosecution with serious charges for the offenses of dangerous bodily harm and rape, against Alexis Georgoulis, a former member of the European Parliament of SYRIZA-P. S.
As the publication states, the recommendation of the Public Prosecutor, in accordance with Belgian law, is submitted to a special court which will decide on the definitive application of the charges by specifying a date for the discussion of a first trial. This was set long before the European elections on June 27. However, one day before, on June 26, Alexis Georgoulis asked for a postponement, resulting in its transfer to a date that is not yet known, possibly within the two months of November-December 2024.
In his written statement, Alexis Georgoulis denies the publication and emphasizes that: “at this time, no criminal charges have been brought against me by the authorities and I am not accused of any crime and I ask you to respect the truth and the presumption of innocence as the reproduction of inaccurate news has irreparable consequences for my personality.”
