1302: The general Nikolaos Mouzalonas is defeated by the vastly superior forces of the Ottoman Osman at battle of Vapheus, near Nicomedia. This defeat of the Byzantines resulted in the occupation of the rest of Asia Minor by the Turks.

1885:O Emmanuel Roidis falls victim to a car accident. The author of “Papissa Joanna” was dragged by two carriages on Filellinon Street, with the result that the wheel of one of the carriages passed over his head, fracturing his upper jaw.

1922: Law 2905 establishes for the first time the Entrance Exams. They will be implemented two years later in the School of Physics and Mathematics and from 1926 in the other schools of the University of Athens.

1924: Closing ceremony of the 8th Olympic Games in Paris. 2,956 athletes and 136 athletes from 44 countries took part.

1940: THE Bugs Bunny makes his debut on the big screen, with the animated film “A Wild Hare”.

1953: The armistice is signed in the city of Munsan, North Korea, ending the Korean War. Since then, the Hellenic Korean Expeditionary Force has been upgraded from a Battalion to a Regiment and will be repatriated in October 1955.

1974: The Lynyrd Skynyrd release their smash hit ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ as a single.

1996: A bomb explodes in Atlanta’s Olympic Park, during the Olympics. One dead and 110 injured, the tally.

1864: Dimitrios Plaputas, hero of the Greek Revolution, general and politician after independence. (Born 15/5/1786)

1917:Emil Kocher, Swiss physician and medical researcher. In 1909 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his contribution to the physiology, pathology and surgery of the thyroid gland. (Born 25/8/1841)

1992: Jenny Karezi, stage name of Eugenia Karpouzis, Greek actress. (Born 12/1/1934)
