The main measures taken are the killing of all animals in the facility, sanitary landfill, disinfection and closure of the particular facility
After the detection of a case of plague of small ruminants (sheep and goats) in a livestock unit in mountainous Corinthia, a meeting was held at the offices of the regional unit, with the aim, as announced, “to deal with the problem and take the measures imposed by the European regulation to limit and the eradication of the disease”.
As stated by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Rural Development, George Stratakos, “after the detection of the case, the main meters taken are the killing of of all the animals of the unit and then followed by landfill, disinfection and closure of that facility for as long as necessary to ensure that it no longer has infectious power.”
“Of course,” he continued, “what we should mention is that for the measures to be successful, there must be very good cooperation of the farmers located within the two protection and surveillance zonesaround the unit where the case was detected, with the veterinary services of the Peloponnese Region”.
For his part, the regional governor of Peloponnese, Dimitris Ptochos, said in his statements that “our reaction was immediate, with the aim of limiting and taking the necessary measures” and added: “The broad meeting that took place also shows the degree of readiness of all involved. We follow the protocol, we have confidence in our services and it would be good to repeat that it is not transmitted to humans”.
