Gemi, the strongest typhoon to hit the country this year, brought heavy rain and gale-force winds to coastal cities in Fujian province on Friday as it moved inland from the southeast coast.
The torrential rains that are still falling because of it tropical storm Gemi triggered a landslide that killed 12 people in southern China, led to flash floods in the northeastern part of the country and caused problems in the railway network in other parts of the country.
The winds that accompany the weather phenomenon Gemi, which was downgraded to a tropical storm from a typhoon, have mostly died down by today, but many parts of China remain on alert for the risk of flooding from earlier rains. After the tropical storm, there may be further rainfall in cities already burdened by heavy rains, the meteorological services warned.
The 12 people died in a landslide that occurred near the town Hengyang in the province Hunan this morning, trapping 18 people, state broadcaster CCTV reported. Six injured survivors were rescued. Hunan authorities also issued a flood warning as heavy rains continued in the province today.
Meanwhile, two officials, including the deputy mayor of the city Linjiang in the province Jilin, are missing, CCTV added, citing city authorities. More than 27,000 people in northeastern China were evacuated from their homes and hundreds of factories were suspended.

Authorities in Jilin province, which is located on the border with North Korea, this morning upgraded their warning for heavy rains and flash floods. Linjiang authorities ordered the closure of schools, factories and businesses today, warning that “major flood damage may occur”.
At the same time in the southern province Guangdong and the island Hainan rail services were suspended, while some passenger rail services resumed in the southern provinces Fujian and Jiangxi as the storm headed north.
Gemi, which killed dozens of people, worsened the seasonal rains in the Philippines and swept the Taiwanaffected nearly 630,000 people in Fujianhalf of which were transferred elsewhere, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.
