He points out that, according to the scientific data so far, the plague of goats and sheep is not transmitted to humans, while the derivatives of goat farming (milk – meat) are currently being traded without problems
We give “race against time to eradicate the diseasesaid in a press release the regional governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, referring to the plague that has affected sheep and goats, with a case also being detected in Aspropyrgos.
In detail, the press release states:
The competent services of the Attica Region are on the alert after the confirmation of the first case of sheep and goat plague in a livestock unit in Aspropyrgos.
By decision of the Regional Governor Nikos Hardalia, following consultation with the Ministers of Rural Development and Food and Interior, strict health protocols have been implemented in the region from the first moment, while the veterinary services of the Attica Region conduct continuous and meticulous checks.
Earlier, a broad meeting was held to reassess the situation and upgrade protection measures with the aim of eradicating the disease.
Protection measures
As decided, the measures focus on:
- In the immediate detection of any primary cases
- In the immediate killing, within 24 hours, of the animals that are sick
- In direct control with multiple mobile units and with targeted samples.
At the same time, the protection zone is set at 3 kilometers and the surveillance zone at 10 kilometers, while the movement of live animals for breeding, slaughter and to the summer pastures has been prohibited throughout Attica.
It is pointed out that, at this moment, in the Region they have already been constituted three local Centers for Disease Control (TKEN), with all the serving veterinarians of the Region of Attica being on foot.
In addition, with the cooperation of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, two additional laboratories have been recruited for the faster processing of the samples. On the order of the Regional Governor of Attica, all the competent officials of the Region are in the area, under the Deputy Regional Governor of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Dimitra Angelaki and the Deputy Regional Governor of Western Attica Kleanthi Varelas, for on-site inspections and direct cooperation with the breeder.
It is noted that several days ago – before the confirmation of the first case – the specialized staff of the Regional Disease Control Centers had quarantined two livestock units that had legally procured live lamb goats from Romania.
23 animal killings in Western Attica
After the appearance of the first case and under the suspicion of possible other cases, so far 23 animals have been cremated in Western Attica, in accordance with the European protocol, with the livestock unit in question being quarantined.
The General Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the Region requests the immediate cooperation of the breeders and feed traders of Attica, whom it calls on to be in direct and continuous communication with the competent services of the Region, in order to report any possible case.
For livestock farmers, all the relevant compensations defined by the Community Directive are provided for and the procedure will be followed in this particular case as well, as is the case with all infectious diseases.
He points out that, with the scientific data so far, rinderpest is not transmissible to humans, while the derivatives of goat breeding (milk – meat) are traded for the time being without problems, as long as the European regulations are respected. In particular, milk is handled normally, after high pasteurization at 72 degrees for 15 seconds and
the meat is also consumed normally, as long as it undergoes the necessary heat treatment.
“We ask for the cooperation of everyone and above all our breeders”
As the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, stated: “From the first moment, we are on full alert and on full alert. In collaboration with the Ministries of Rural Development and Food and Interior, we immediately upgraded the protection measures, following the necessary protocols and European directives to the letter. We are in a race against time to contain and eradicate the disease as soon as possible. The competent services of the Attica Region are with specialized personnel in the field for permanent and on-site inspections.
Our goal is to isolate the virus. And for this reason, we ask for the cooperation of everyone and primarily of our breeders”.
