1844: The first elections are held in Greece under Otho.

1923: The Athens Refugee Hospital, later Hippocrate, is founded in Athens.

1951: The “United Democratic Left” (EDA) is founded, on the initiative of Ioannis Passalidis, Dimitris Mariolis, Stamatis Hatzimbei and Michalis Kyrkou.

1981: US air traffic controllers begin permanent strike. Their 13,000 union members will be phased out by President Ronald Reagan in a bold display of his neoliberal policies.

1989: Olympic Aviation Shorts 330 aircraft crashes near the airport of Samos, resulting in the death of all 34 passengers.

1996: Niki Bakoyannis breaks the 2-meter barrier in the high jump and with a performance of 2.02 m wins the silver medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games. She will go down in the Guinness Book of Records as the athlete with the largest difference (33 points) between physical height (1.70 m) and height exceeded (2.02 m).
