Salmon, salmon and more salmon. Just open a food delivery app and you’ll see that a single fish reigns supreme among the most popular Japanese restaurants in São Paulo. Against this monotony of sushi, sashimi and temaki in the same color and flavor, a fishmonger has been consolidating itself in the market with an offering that stands out for its variety. There are more than 30 options of very fresh fish and seafood at prices that allow you to put together a multifaceted tasting.

On the Montoza Pescados menu, there is tuna and salmon, of course, but there are also dishes with cobia, amberjack, dogfish, horse mackerel, grouper, sole, meca, namorado, snapper, sardines, sororoca, mullet, salmon roe, mullet roe, capelin roe, cod roe, white catfish roe, sea urchin, pink shrimp, crab, octopus, crab, scallop, eel and crayfish.

The image shows a sushi roll placed on a green leaf on a dark plate. The sushi roll consists of molded white rice and topped with a slice of fish, which has a silver part and a red part. The background of the image is black, highlighting the sushi roll and the leaf.

Nigiri (sushi with a slice of fish on top of rice) can be chosen individually from the menu and cost from R$8. Alternatively, customers can order combinations selected by the restaurant, which usually feature the freshest seafood of the day. In addition, there are sashimi and rolled sushi on the menu.

Montoza was already well-established in supplying fish to restaurants when the Covid-19 pandemic began and it had to reinvent itself. First, it began selling its products directly to consumers. In addition to selling fish, it went a step further and launched a sushi delivery service.

At first, service was only available via WhatsApp, which was slow and confusing, but things have improved over time. Orders can now be placed via apps like Ifood and Goomer, where you can see photos of the dishes. Service has also improved in speed, and a recent order was received in just half an hour.

With access to quality fish, Montoza’s sushi is very well made. There is a good balance between the amount of rice and fish, and the shari is very well seasoned, with great texture and flavor, showing the care taken in preparation.

Among so many options, some of the most interesting sushis at the fishmonger’s are the sardine sushi (R$13), which has a very strong flavor, and the mackerel sushi (R$9). Among the more special preparations, the scallop sushi (R$27) stands out, so delicate that it gives the sensation of biting into the sea, and the fatty tuna sushi (R$35), which seems to melt in your mouth.

Although it is a good option to try a variety of very well-made sushi, it is important to remember that it is a delivery service, with all the convenience and limitations of any home delivery.

The presentation of the sushi is ugly and leaves much to be desired, as it arrives somewhat compacted in a box, which compromises its appearance. In addition, there is a risk of missing the ideal temperature window for freshly prepared sushi, which is an important advantage of the restaurants. The delivery also does not include identification of the sushi, making the customer have to guess which fish is in each piece, which is a problem for those who are looking to learn about preparations that go beyond tuna and salmon.

Even with the delivery setbacks, the quality and variety of sushi make up for it, allowing for an experience that goes beyond the “beans and rice” of many Japanese restaurants.
