Temperature anomalies are common during the Antarctic winter, but this episode is not considered out of the ordinary because of its duration
Antarctica, the world’s coldest continent, is also experiencing a heat wave during its exceptionally long winter, according to the British institute that specializes in the study of polar regions.
“The duration of this heat period is unusual,” Thomas Caton Harrison, an expert at the British Antarctic Survey, told AFP.
In the month of July, the average temperatures of the southern continent were 3.1 degrees Celsius above normal levels for the season, according to him. This is the second warmest July since July 1981 since records began in 1979.
Average daily temperatures ranged between -34.68°C on July 15 and -28.12°C on July 31, according to data posted online by the University of Maine.
The temperature was -26.6°C on the continent on August 7, the latest available date.
Temperature anomalies are common during the Antarctic winter, but this episode is not considered out of the ordinary because of its duration, according to scientists. This is a prolonged heat that is “remarkable”, emphasizes Thomas Caton Harrison.
“Very early data suggests we could be in for an exceptionally warm Antarctic winter,” he said.
