The region of Ilia has been placed under surveillance by the National Public Health Organization (EODY) after the recording of three cases of streptococcus, two of which were fatal.

According to ERT, a team of the EODY is in the area and is taking random samples with blood draws from different incidents at the Pyrgos Hospital.

The first case of streptococcus concerns the man from Livadia who was on vacation in Katakolo and his death was initially attributed to a brown spider bite.

The head of the Forensic Service of Patras, Angeliki Tsiola, in the report she signs states that the cause of his death is streptococcus. However, in his case the spider bite was not accidental, as there were two bite marks on his leg and it is possible that the insect or rodent that bit him also transmitted the strep virus.

The second incident also concerns a visitor to Ilia, specifically Ancient Olympia.

The commander of the Pyrgos Hospital, Spyros Politis, reported to “Peloponnisos” that the man was transferred there on Saturday. As he described, when his medical history was taken he was already on some treatment. The doctors of Pyrgos, after examining him, discovered his particularly difficult condition and sent him to Patras, where a few hours later he died of septic shock.

“On Monday we had a third case which we also sent to Patras, who is being treated in the ICU. This incident seems to be going well” Mr. Politis told us, adding that these incidents are not related to each other, apart from the fact that they were infected by the same virus.

He announced that “after these incidents, on Monday a team of the EODY came to our hospital and started taking samples from cases that come to the hospital, in order to be tested for streptococcus. These samples will be taken until today, so that they can then be tested to see if it was a fluke or if there is a widespread problem in the community.”

The subject of the three cases of invasive streptococcus in Ilia was also broadcast by last night’s SKAI news bulletin:
