450 businesses were checked in the last week alone – 14 were sealed
The Real Estate Services of the Ministry of National Economy and Finance have carried out 2,500 inspections of citizen complaints about infringements on seashores and beaches throughout the country in the last week – 12,500 in total since the beginning of the summer – until today. In total, during this year’s period, more than 1,600 businesses were checked, of which 450 in the last week.
The checks are carried out in collaboration with the Greek Police and the local Municipalities, while the complaints examined basically came through the application MyCoastbut also through phone calls from citizens to the local Real Estate Services.
The general picture from the mass checks in recent weeks is clearly more improved than in previous years, as the majority of businesses operating on the beaches have complied with the new rules and the new legal framework.
However, several violations also emerged from the controls, which include the absence of hanging signs to excesses of the occupied space by additional umbrella seats, other constructions as well as cases where the occupation without a concession contract was arbitrary. All the prescribed administrative fines have been imposed on all businesses that have been found to be in violation, while in cases where there was no contract, a total of 36 beach sections that were illegally occupied have been sealed, of which 14 in the last week in the areas of Corfu (2), Messinia (2), Ilia (3), Kefallonia (7).
It is noted that the 7 regions of the country that have collected the most complaints since the beginning of the summer and were checked as a matter of priority are the following:
• Chalcidice: 1,930 complaints were examined. Autopsies have been carried out at 24 beaches where approximately 1,500 complaints have been made.
• Eastern Attica: 1,579 complaints were examined, of which 183 in the last 5 days. Autopsies have been carried out on 22 beaches, i.e. 80% of the beaches where complaints have been made.
• I predicted: 1,355 complaints were investigated. The levels of inspectors proceeded to checks on 8 beaches, where more than 600 complaints have been made.
• Dodecanese: 799 complaints were investigated. The levels of inspectors proceeded to checks on 16 beaches, where more than 330 complaints have been made. In Rhodes, a joint control group has been set up between the Real Estate Service, the Municipality and other services and there is coordination and close cooperation for the controls.
• Cyclades: The Cyclades collect a relatively low number of complaints this year. So far, 552 complaints have been investigated and autopsies have been carried out in Mykonos and Paros. A level of the Real Estate Service is located in Thira and cooperates with the Municipality for inspections and autopsies, while there is also cooperation with the Municipality for autopsies in Naxos, Tinos and Andros.
• Corfu: 372 complaints were examined. Autopsies were conducted at 4 beaches where 77 complaints were made.
• Chania: 264 complaints were examined in total, which were carried out on a total of 7 beaches, on which autopsies have already been carried out.
