An 80-year-old man was arrested today by officers of the Directorate for Dealing with Arson Crimes (D.A.E.E.), in execution of an arrest warrant, as being responsible for provoking four fires in a forested area, by intention and as a result on August 11, 2024, in the Glyka Nera region of Attica.
The 80-year-old is being held and will be brought to the Athens Prosecutor’s Office tomorrow.
The 80-year-old is accused of 3 fires that broke out simultaneously at around 1:30 p.m. in Sweet Watersat a distance of 100 meters between them and for another fire at 20:30 of the same day. It is recalled that while the fire brigade was dealing with the above fires, the fire broke out in Megara (s.p. at 13:32) and was followed by the large fire in Varnavas Attica (s.p. at 15:03) and the fire in Agia Sunday of Eretria (s.s. at 15:53).
According to information, the 80-year-old, who is retired from the private sector (he ran a store) and has no history of psychiatric problems, refuses to speak and has not confessed or admitted his actions.
At the same time, according to the same information, empty canisters used for gasoline were found in his car.
The fires were started by throwing a burning object (cloth or paper), while a zippo lighter (open) was also found in the last hearth.
The defendant was identified by video footage where it appears that he was setting the fires while driving his car. In particular, he slowed down and threw the burning object onto dry grass.
