The park will generate energy equal to the annual consumption of more than 85,000 households, reducing emissions by more than 80,000 tonnes of CO2 per year
METLEN Energy & Metals has launched its second privately owned project in Chile, the Doña Antonia Solar Park, a total investment of $65 million, with an installed capacity of 90 MW, to provide 100% renewable energy for the country’s green development.
The opening ceremony was attended by, among others, the Greek ambassador to Chile, Mr. Nikolaos Piperigos, the senator of the Coquimbo region, Mr. Sergio Gahona, the member of parliament, Marco Antonio Sulandai, as well as regional government officials and representatives of neighboring communities.
The Doña Antonia photovoltaic park, which has 151,920 panels, has been included in the portfolio of development projects of the region and has been built on an area of 200 hectares, 14 kilometers north of Ovalle, in the Coquimbo region.
It is worth noting that the construction of the project started in 2023, with more than 400 workers, and at the end of 2025 it will also have energy storage batteries (BESS), contributing to a reduction in consumption by storing the energy, which will be collected during the day.
During the construction of the park, meetings were held with the local community in order to prepare a special project for the protection of the archaeological heritage of a neighboring park, “Panulcillo II”. This initiative, which was implemented in collaboration with the members of the local community, had the result of highlighting the cultural heritage of the wider area, with the installation of informative signs, the construction of an integrated modern network of sidewalks, the placement of both rest points for citizens and ecological waste bins, which were made from 1,200 kg of recycled plastic.
Juan Pablo Toledo, Country Manager of METLEN LATIN AMERICA (LATAM), said during his speech that “as we celebrate this opening, we look forward to a very promising future. Doña Antonia Park is much more than solar panels. It is a tangible proof of what we can make a reality when we all work together with a common, global vision, which METLEN realizes from Greece, Latin America or Chile. Doña Antonia reminds us that the path to a sustainable world is not individual, but requires the collective effort of governments, businesses and communities.”
Following the inauguration of the Doña Antonia and Willka (109.2 MW) solar parks last December, the Tocopilla (227 MW) and Tamarico (167 MW) parks will be commissioned within 2024. Through these four projects, METLEN’s total investment in Chile will reach $460 million. Finally, it is noted that METLEN will supply energy to Enel Chile, with which it has already signed a solar power sale agreement (PPA).
