Water (again) not enough… Village submerged in Morno now resurfaces – Heartbreaking images
The water reserves in the lake of Mornowhich supplies water to Attica, are dangerously low. Its level has even dropped so low due to the limited rainfall as a result the village of Kalliowhich was sunk to be revealed again.
“If the level drops too much it is impossible to pump water. This means that the Athenians will have to move” emeritus NTUA professor Kimon Hatzimpiros told SKAI.
The images taken on August 18 by mechanical engineer Giorgos Halkos and presented by SKAI are heartbreaking:
“It’s one of the times he’s gone too far. It has gone down again, but now it has gone down too much (…) the level has gone down too low, and the difference in height from the overflow is too big,” said Mr. Halkos.
Lake Mornou has been built precisely to supply Athens. In the early 90s we had a big water shortage. Fortunately, however, he had time to start the project of Evinos, the lake of Evinos which feeds the lake of Mornos so that the water then reaches Athens, and we believed then that the problem of Athens’ water supply has been definitively solved because the quantities of water available at that time were very large, added Mr. Hatzimpiros.
“The immediate thing to do now is to save water in the city and everywhere, so that the few reserves we have will last until this extraordinary phenomenon passes. I remember in the past it was forbidden to wash cars, to wash verandas where water is not absolutely necessary and we can be deprived of it for a while so that we have something to drink” the professor underlined.
Scientists are concerned and draw attention as the water shortage nightmare he’s more intense than ever…
In the last two years, the lack of rain has significantly reduced the water reserves of the reservoirs that supply Attica. EYDAP is already activating additional sources, as foreseen in its programming.
In the satellite images analyzed by the National Observatory of Athens, on July 12, 2023 and shown on maps, the water-covered area of the artificial lake amounted to 16.6 square kilometers. One year later, on July 16, 2024, reduced to 12.8 square kilometers.
