According to representatives of the market this year there will be no increases – From 20 to 50 euros the cost, depending on the age and needs of the student
“The summer sales are leaving and the student’s basket is coming to hold down the prices of basic school supplies. The combination of discounts, offers and baskets works in favor of consumers” notes the president of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ΕΒΕΠ) in his statement to ERT Vassilis Korkidis.
Last year, school supplies prices rose by more than 10%, while, in line with the 6% year-on-year decline in stationery prices in July, it is estimated that this year we will not have increasesdespite a quadrupling of transport costs of imports from China by 2024.
Thus, according to the president of EBEP, it is estimated that the average cost of the school list will range from 20 to 50 eurosdepending on the age and needs of the student.
From August 28 the “student’s basket”
From Wednesday, August 28, the “student basket” will be applied to the market, which will be valid until October 15.
The basket will include all the items needed in view of the new school year, such as bags, cases, notebooks, pads, labels, covers, pencils, markers, crayons, erasers, sharpeners, pencils, rulers and photocopy paper.
The Minister of Development asked the representatives of the school supplies market to exhaust all margins for profit reduction and for prices to be better than last year, since, according to this year’s price reduction in the stationery sector, no revaluation of school supplies is justified.
He also emphasized that there will be strict controls by DIMEA, while, following a legislative initiative for related violations, the maximum fine has risen to 5 million euros.
What doesn’t go in the cart
The school list is not limited to stationery and consumables, since it usually includes other items, such as school supplies, painting and craft supplies, foreign language books, gym uniforms and other complementary products and activities, the prices of which are not included in the basket, emphasizes Mr. Korkidis.
“We have to give incentives with affordable prices, all year round to our domestic perennial customers, so that they choose to make their purchases, either physically or digitally from the shelves of Greek stores. The combination of discounts, offers and baskets works in favor of consumers”, states the president of the EBEP.
