Agios Fanourios
Agios Fanourios is a saint of the Orthodox Church. Its historical existence was not known to the Synaxarists until the 14th century, or according to others until the 15th century, when an icon of it was found on the island of Rhodes. According to this painted representation, the Saint wore military clothes and suffered 12 martyrdoms. However, there is also the assumption by researchers that his depiction resembles that of Saint George, with which it appears to have several similarities.
Since the icon was found, it has been considered the patron saint of the island of Rhodes. His reputation as a saint quickly spread to the Dodecanese, Cyprus, Crete, Chios, Lesvos, Patras and the rest of Greece. Today, there are many churches built in his name.
His memory is commemorated and celebrated every year on August 27. On the eve of his feast, it is customary to prepare a fasting dessert, Fanuropita.
