Large scale cleaning business of all the tiled sections of the Kifisos River, the Region of Attica is starting, removing tons of rubble and waste, so that with the complete release of the section there will be an unimpeded flow of rain. The operation is expected to be completed at the end of October and is part of the region’s effort to improve the protection of citizens from flooding.

The covered parts of Kifissos occupy 8.6 kilometers (of the total 27 km length of the river), having been a source of significant problems at times, due to the chronic accumulation of transported materials in them.

It is noted that the cleaning is being carried out for the first time, after many decades and under extremely difficult conditions. The absence of adequate ventilation and lighting makes the use of generators and floodlights and special personal protection equipment imperative due to the presence of an abundance of insects. Also, use of crawlers to access the inside of the duct due to the muddy substrate as well as hydraulic breakers to break up large sections of concrete that have fallen from the roof and side walls.

The main problem, however, within the closed part of the pipeline, lies in the existence of high-level water. It is characteristic that during the autopsy carried out at the beginning of August, starting from Agias Annis Street (at the height of the area of Agios Ioannis Rentis), access became prohibited after two kilometers, as the water height reached 80 centimeters.

As the governor of Attica states, Nikos Hardalias: “The decision to proceed with the cleaning of the tiled sections of the Kifissos river after several years that had been left without any maintenance, was not only necessary, but also imposed by the responsibility we bear towards the citizens and the environment. The situation in which these departments found themselves was dangerous and required immediate actions, especially in view of the challenges brought by climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.

The Region of Attica is committed to continuing to undertake initiatives that protect public health and the environment. With this business, we not only prevent the risk of flooding, but also demonstrate our commitment to improving the quality of life of the residents of the basin. Modern Attica requires infrastructures that work and ensure the well-being of all of us”.

The project of cleaning the bed of Kifissos, and in particular its tiled sections, has a total budget of 1,242,987 euros.

The covered sections of the river, starting from the Faleri bay to the edges of the mountains of Penteli and Parnitha, include the following sections:

– from the Faliri bay (in front of Posidonos Avenue) to the height of Bizaniou Street in the Municipality of Moschatos – Tavros (1.5 km long),

– from Agias Annis Street in the Municipality of Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Rentis to the junction of Perissos and Pappa Streets in the Municipality of Nea Filadelfia-Nea Chalkidona (length 7.3 km),

– from the height of Odyssea Androutsou Street to the height of Lesvos Street in the Municipality of Nea Filadelfia-Nea Chalkidona (length 0.15 km).

The operation in question is part of a broader plan of the Attica Region to upgrade all the important water resources and infrastructure of the basin, with the aim of strengthening flood protection and ensuring a sustainable future for all residents, the region notes.
