As a matter of urgency due to the impending bad weather and after the issuance of the emergency weather report by the National Meteorological Service, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, convened the Scientific Risk Assessment Committee.

Immediately after, he held a Coordination Meeting with the participation of representatives of the relevant Ministries, Regions, the Security Forces and the Armed Forces.

As mentioned in the relevant announcement: “Although the EMY’s emergency bulletin speaks of worsening weather – not dangerous weather phenomena – and the Risk Assessment Committee recommended to the General Secretariat of Civil Protection that according to the scientific data so far there is no reason to issue messages from at 112, the Minister of Civil and Political Affairs, Vassilis Kikilias, pointed out at the Coordinating Meeting that because the phenomenon is dynamic and in some places it may present great intensity and rapidity, it should:

  • The competent bodies should immediately inform the Unified Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) for any local flooding phenomenon (eg flooding on roads, overflowing streams, rivers, etc.) so that, if the circumstances require it, timely messages are issued from the 112.
  • The Fire Brigade and the Armed Forces should be on operational alert and the Greek Police should issue local traffic regulations.
  • In areas with a history of flooding, there should be continuous monitoring of the phenomenon by local agencies, as problems may occur again. Especially in these areas, the local government should proceed with all the necessary actions to avoid flooding phenomena (eg cleaning wells).
  • Where there is intense lightning activity, there should be immediate information, so that all the necessary actions are taken immediately to protect citizens (e.g. implementation of recommendations to avoid beaches, postponement of events, etc.)”.
