After almost a month and a half, the two youths involved in the episode of the brutal beating of the 51-year-old Greek-Canadian, in a bar in Heraklion, Crete, in mid-July, surrendered to the Hellenic Police.

Arrest warrants for attempted homicide were issued against the two young men, from Zoniana and Gazi respectively, who had been identified in the first 24 hours as part of the Police Preliminary Investigation.

According to information from Cretalive, the two young men initially went to Gazi, from where they were then picked up by the Heraklion Security Police and taken to the Police Headquarters.

It is noted that the intervening time, that is, from the issuance of the warrants until today, had been exercised by EL.AS. suffocating pressure to locate and arrest the two young men, while successive police operations had been carried out in Zoniana, as there was information that both had found “shelter” in houses in the area.

On the part of the two defendants, it is said that although there was an argument and a fight with the 51-year-old, in no case do they accept the seriousness of the actions attributed to them (attempted murder), while it is reported that other persons were also involved in the incident, the which to this day have not been identified despite the role they played in the episode.

The video-documentary with the brutal beating

It is recalled that a video-document recording exactly how the episode started with the group of Cretans and the Greek-Canadian of Cretan origin in a bar in Heraklion was made public by Cretalive.

The disputed frames, as you will watch in the video, show the family of the 49-year-old Greek-Canadian leaving the bar after having fun. In the lead is one of the sons of the family with his mother, the 41-year-old Icelandic wife of the 49-year-old patient. The woman looks cheerful as she walks towards the exit of the kefati shop, raises her arms and sways.

A few meters behind follows the 49-year-old with the second son of the family. The video clearly shows the moment in which a patron (one of the accused) accidentally touches the Greek-Canadian with his cigarette in his hand, who turns his head towards the group, while at the same time rubbing his hand over the spot touch the cigarette butt.

The young man who accidentally burns the 49-year-old holds the cigarette behind his back as he faces his company and they chat carelessly. As the Greek-Canadian passes by, the young man reportedly leans in to speak to a friendly person, causing his cigarette to touch the man who was walking right behind him to get out.

The video has no sound so that there is an image of the dialogues, but it seems that the Kritikos with the cigarette is nodding to the 49-year-old in order to tell him that he had not seen him. The Greek-Canadian makes a move to leave, but eventually turns back and heads towards him. They seem to be exchanging some small talk about the cigarette incident, while the young man’s group is still chatting normally, unaware of what has happened.

At that moment, a third young man enters the shot (he was not sitting in the group), who enters between the two who are talking and essentially asks the 49-year-old to leave and end any misunderstanding. Then other people from both sides start gathering around them. They are clearly seen exchanging words, gesturing and shoving from both sides (the 41-year-old Icelander also gets in the way) and the whole commotion now shifts outside the bar, with the unfortunately familiar results.

The two young men are expected to be brought before the Courts of Heraklion on Tuesday.
