The two defendants, aged 31 and 32, were sentenced to temporary custody with the agreement of the investigator and prosecutor, for the beating of a 49-year-old Greek-Canadian in the early hours of July 16.

The violent incident had occurred outside a nightclub in the center of Heraklion, with the 49-year-old being injured and the result being his hospitalization for several days.

According to their defense attorney Alexandra Spanaki, the two defendants claimed that in no case did they have any homicidal intent, nor even the intent to cause him serious injury, while they argued that although they apologized to him several times because they accidentally burned his hand with a hot pot from a cigarette, he himself did not accept it and it was he, as they pointed out, who caused the fight.

Their lawyer even referred to injuries that did not have the seriousness that was claimed and made public from the first moment, while she noted that in the case it is a question, because the other people who were involved have not been identified and the degree of their participation has also been recorded in video.
