The Risk Assessment Committee met again today for the development of the bad weather “ATENA” that has been affecting the country since yesterday. As the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, states in his post in “X” “the heavy rains and storms will continue and intensify from this evening mainly in areas of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as well as in the islands of the northern Aegean (Thassos, Samothraki, Lemnos and ‘Ag. Efstratios)’, while adding that the General Secretariat of Civil Protection has informed all the agencies involved so that they are on heightened alert.

In particular, Mr. Kikilias underlines:

“The Risk Assessment Committee met again today for the development of the bad weather “ATENA” that has been affecting the country since yesterday. According to the Commission’s scientists, but also as stated in the updated Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena of the EMY, the heavy rains and storms will continue and intensify from this evening mainly in areas of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as well as in the islands of the north Aegean (Thassos, Samothraki, Limnos and Ag. Efstratios). The phenomena will be accompanied by a high frequency of lightning, hail and strong winds. The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has informed the competent services, OTAs and all the bodies involved, so that they are on heightened alert, in order to immediately deal with any problems that will be caused by the dangerous weather phenomena».

It is noted that according to the updated Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena (EDEK), issued today at 13:30 local time, the severe weather Atena accompanied by a barometric low in the Ionian Sea is moving east and affecting the central and northern mainland as well as its islands northern and eastern Aegean with heavy rains and storms until the afternoon hours of Wednesday (11-09-24).

The phenomena will be accompanied by a high frequency of lightning, hail and strong gusty winds.

Heavy rain and storms are forecast:

  1. Until the evening hours of Tuesday (10-9-2024) in Western Macedonia, Thessaly, Sporades and Evia (mainly in the north). The phenomena are predicted to be intense in places and at times.
  2. From the evening hours of Tuesday (10-09-24) until noon on Wednesday (11-09-24) in Central and Eastern Macedonia. The phenomena from the evening hours of Tuesday (10-09-24) until the midday hours of Wednesday (11-09-24) in eastern Macedonia are predicted to be particularly intense.
  3. From the evening of Tuesday (10-09-24) until the afternoon hours of Wednesday (11-09-24) in Thrace and the islands of the North and East Aegean. The phenomena on the night of Tuesday (10-09-24) and until the midday hours of Wednesday (11-09-24) in Thrace and the islands of the North Aegean (Thassos, Samothraki, Agios Efstratios and Lemnos) are predicted to be particularly strong while in the islands of the Eastern Aegean it will be strong in places and at intervals.
