On the highway Artas-Trikalathe road that crosses central Tzoumerka, after the village of Melates, reveals the place that was “swallowed” by the waters of the dam Pournariou 43 years ago. It is the settlement Fagos of the village Kato Kalentini.

As we approach the shore, the scenery captivates the visitor. With the eye we perceive that the water level has receded by several meters. Absolute silence. Ruins of stone houses and the school submerged in mud. Tree trunks and roots that have withstood time and water, look like fossils. The bottom in many places has completely dried up.

The level of the artificial lake of Pournario, due to the lack of rain, has dropped at least 10 meters, residents in the coffee shop of the area report to APE-MPE. It is the first time this phenomenon has happened, they say and point out that it has been raining for many months, since last April. In fact, Mr. Thomas explains to us how the waters covered the two-seater school, which has now appeared again, to remind them nostalgically of their childhood, when 120 students flooded its classrooms.

The older ones look at their destroyed houses in the muddy water and the memories come alive.

Ms. Athena lives right across the street and every day, she looks down on her neighborhood, the place where she grew up. As he mentions, seven shops operated in the settlement, there was life, many families lived. He remembers the days when they left their homes in the early 1980s to restart their lives on higher ground. The waters of the dam disappeared then, their place.

The lake Pournarioucovers an area of 18.3 square kilometers and is the result of the construction of the homonymous hydroelectric dam in Bear river, near Peta.

The lake created a wonderful artificial ecosystem in the area, with great fish and bird life. In the waters of the lake, we find, among others, carp, flounder, wild trout, eels. The area is a refuge for many birds, such as night ravens, mallards, kingfishers, cormorants, brown-headed gulls and river whistlers. The tour of the area impresses the visitor, in all seasons. Kato Kalentini, is a picturesque lakeside village immersed in the greenery of nature, among plane trees and cycads.
