A 13-year-old student, who was alone at his home in Zografou, experienced moments of panic when a stranger called him, pretending to be the policeman. The stranger claimed that his mother had caused a serious car accident, injuring a child, and asked him for money so that the woman would not end up in prison.

According to ERT, the 13-year-old’s mother describes the situation: “Mom tells him she ran a red light, hit a little girl who is going to have an operation and, in order not to go to jail, you have to collect money. They asked him for 70,000 euros, the child panicked.”

Under the fraudster’s instructions, the 13-year-old collected 2,500 euros in cash, jewelry and watches with a total value of 2,000 euros, put them in a bag and threw it from the balcony of his house. The crooks took the bag and disappeared.

A short time later, the perpetrator called the minor again, demanding more money. When his mother had now returned home, they agreed to deliver a new bag of jewelry. The appointment was made in the area of Omonia, where the police had already set up a trap.

According to the boy’s mother, “the little one left the backpack. The police were there. As soon as a woman took it and went to leave in a taxi, he was arresting her.”

Police arrested the 67-year-old woman from Bulgaria as she was picking up the bag. Lately, phone scams have been on the rise and authorities are calling on citizens to be especially careful.
