A rare case both for Greece and for the rest of the world and at the same time a very touching moment for a family and a “station” for Science. A 55-year-old woman in Heraklion gave birth to her grandson a few days ago, according to cretalive.gr.

As obstetrician-gynecologist Alexandros Zervakis states in his post, the daughter lives in Athens and the mother in Crete.

Grandmother determined, life-long goal to help her daughter born with MAYER-ROKITA -KUSTER-HAUSER syndrome type 1, a condition in which there is congenital uterine agenesis while the ovaries are there for the production of eggs” – says the doctor, explaining that this is a rare syndrome recorded with a probability of approximately 1/5000 live births of girls and 2-3 cases occur every year in Greece.

This “journey” began with hesitation and after disappointments, as the couple had already tried without success, while in their case time was not an ally. So for the surrogate grandmother, corrective interventions had to be done in order to be able to conceive, while factors of difficulty were her pre-existing hypertension, age and the strict legal framework.

Preparation, operations, tests, committees for approvals from the National Infertility Authority took two years. The first embryo transfer failed, but the second – 2 months before the license for the last embryo transfer expired – succeeded!

The grandmother turned out to be a “soldier” and …. a 3.5 kg baby was born.

“For 30 years I waited and was afraid of this moment,” said the woman after the birth, who did everything for her daughter primarily and secondarily for her grandson, the doctor notes in his post.
