“We are facing a very difficult situation in Corinth. This fire has very big difficulties, because of the relief, it has very big ravines and streams and very high peaks”, emphasized the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias in an emergency briefing on the big fire in Xylokastro, which has been burning for the third day.

He pointed out that the fire has created its own microclimate and noted that on the first day the area was on orange alert.

As the minister said, “the situation is serious and has a criticality”. “In Sofiana and Spataneika, Xanthohori, Eurostina and Mavro Oros the biggest problems are faced”.

He said that “406 firefighters, 16 forest commando groups, aerial vehicles, 13 helicopters and 8 aircraft are working in the area”, while “reinforcements are expected from Italy and Croatia at noon”.

The leadership of the Fire Department is also on site, which, as Mr. Kikilias pointed out, is troubled by the start of the fire, and similar actions are being taken to complete the relevant conclusion.

“We didn’t expect that in this period we would have so many fires,” the Minister of Climate Crisis and Policy said, among others, about the fire in Xylokastro
