Efforts against migrant smuggling by the Coast Guard continue as 70 people were located and rescued within 24 hours.

According to the YNANP announcement, in the early hours of yesterday, the Port Authorities of Heraklion and Kala Ports were informed by the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) of the LS-EL.AKT Headquarters, about a vessel with foreigners on board in a difficult position, in the maritime area of ​​50 n.m. south of the Good Ports of Crete. The 52 foreigners (38 men and 14 minors) were picked up by a Liberian-flagged tanker (D/F), which sailed to the bay of Kalen Limeni, where with the assistance of the barge “ELENI” NP 2097, it safely disembarked the foreigners. The above were taken to the port of Heraklion, accompanied by officials from the relevant Port Authority and the Phaistos Police Department. According to their statement, the foreigners departed in the evening hours on 04/10/2024 from the shores of TOBRUK, Libya, bound for Greece, paying sums of money from 3,000 to 3,400 euros. Two of the foreigners, aged 41 and 17, were recognized by the others as their traffickers and were arrested for violating article 83 of Law 3386/05 “Illegal entry into the country”, article 25 of Law 5038/23 “Facilitation” in conjunction with article 45 P.C. “Partnership”, of article 306 of the Civil Code. “Report” and article 187 par. 2 of the Civil Code “Gang organization”. The Central Port Authority of Heraklion, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, seized the two outboard engines while the transport boat was destroyed.

In the morning hours on 05/10/2024, a boat of the FRONTEX force during a planned patrol, spotted an inflatable boat with foreigners on board in the sea area of ​​Gavatha, Lesvos. Immediately the crew of the boat of the FRONTEX force proceeded to the safe collection and rescue of eighteen (18) foreigners and transported them safely to the port of Petra Lesvos. Afterwards, the foreigners were transferred to the Kara Tepe Mavrovouni KYT quarantine area, while two (02) of the foreigners were transferred by EKAV ambulance to Mytilini General Hospital, for medical treatment. A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Mithymna Port Station, while the boat was destroyed.
