The snowfall has started in Parnitha while the mountains of Thessaloniki are already dressed in white. The provincial road Melissochoriou – Oreokastro remains closed since yesterday, due to bad weather. In Attica, snow is expected from the night and in the semi-mountains.

According to the first estimates of the meteorologists, the bad weather “Filippos” will continue until Sunday.

Closed schools and country roads in Ioannina

Snowfalls occurred at night in many areas of the prefecture of Ioannina, even in the city. Due to the prevailing weather conditions and the snowfall, all the schools of the Municipality of Ioannina, kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools and lyceums, will remain closed today. Snow machines and salt shakers are located overnight on country roads and especially on the mountain road network in order to keep it open, while anti-skid chains are necessary.

Due to the snowfall, which occurs after Metsovo and mainly in Grevena, the traffic for trucks and trucks was temporarily banned. The police stop their traffic at the Drosochori tolls on Egnatia Odos.

According to the General Police Directorate of Western Macedonia due to the continuous snowfall from Tuesday night, the traffic of vehicles throughout the National Provincial Road Network of Western Macedonia as well as on the Egnatia Odos, from Polymylos to Ioannina and the vertical axes – Ieropigi and Florina – Niki, conducted only with anti-skid chains or snow tires.

Also, for precautionary reasons, the traffic of trucks over 3.5 tons has been banned on the Egnatia Odos from the junction of Panagias A / C to the Grevena junction, from Siatista to A / K Polymylos and on the vertical axis of the Egnatia Odos ( A-29) Siatista- Krystallopigi, from Siatista to A / K Aliakmonas.

Also, the traffic on the National and Provincial road network of Grevena – Trikala from the 1st km to the 46th km, Kastoria – Ioannina (via Kotili), from the 25th km to the 54th km, on the highway (A-27) has been banned. from the junction of Koilon to Ptolemaida, on the National Road Florina – Krystallopigi Border Station (via Vigla), from the 1st km to the 52nd km, on the Old National Road Florina – Kozani from the 22nd km to the 30th km and to Nea National Road Florina – Kozani from the 22nd km to the 34th km.

Closed schools in Western Macedonia

With more recent announcements they have issued, many municipalities in Western Macedonia are suspending the operation of school units, due to the continuous and heavy snowfall, even in the cities of the remote region.

In particular, in the Regional Units of Grevena, Kozani, Florina and Kastoria, on Wednesday, March 9, the Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as the kindergartens will not operate.

Problems in the road network of Trikala

The General Regional Police Directorate of Thessaly announces that, according to a decision of the Trikala Police Directorate, the following traffic regulations come into force in the prefecture of Trikala from today, Wednesday, March 9 at 07:20 until the recession of bad weather and weakening weather all types of vehicles with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes are prohibited in both -2- traffic streams:

• emergency vehicles (E.K.A.B. P.Y. etc)

The instructions of the Civil Protection

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr) of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, has informed the competent state services involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, in order to be on increased alert for civil protection, in order to deal immediately with the effects of severe weather.

At the same time, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection recommends to the citizens be very careful, ensuring that self-protection measures are taken against the dangers arising from the occurrence of severe weather phenomena.

In particular, in areas where snow and frost are forecast:

If you are going to travel by car:

To be informed about the weather and the condition of the road network
Have anti-skid chains in their vehicle and the tank full of fuel
To travel, if necessary, preferably during the day, preferring the main roads
To inform their relatives about the route they are going to follow
Change their travel schedule to avoid the onslaught of the weather
To faithfully follow the instructions of the locally competent bodies, such as Traffic, etc.

If moving on foot:

Wear with multiple layers of light clothing instead of heavy clothing and wear appropriate footwear to avoid injuries due to slipperiness
Avoid unnecessary movements during peak phenomena (heavy snowfall, frost conditions)
