Satellite shows ‘blackout’ in Ukraine after Russian invasion; see before and after

by

NASA satellite images show one of the impacts of the war in Ukraine on the country’s daily life, which was practically without light after the Russian invasion, which began on February 24.

Records of the Ukrainian night taken before the war, on February 6, show several spots of light in major cities, such as the capital Kiev and Lviv, at a similar luminosity rate to the neighbors. After the invasion, in the image of this Monday (7) the Ukrainian territory is almost entirely in the dark.

There are a few bright spots left on the map. One of them is Kiev, but the lights in the capital no longer radiate to its surroundings as before. Lviv, close to the Polish border and one of the main refugee exit points, is practically blacked out in the second image.

A similar effect is seen in the Zaporyjia region, where the Russians took control of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, and in Odessa, a strategic city because of its Black Sea port.

One point with less variation is Donbass, within which Donetsk lies in eastern Ukraine. With a strong pro-Russian separatist movement, the region was one of the triggers of the war, after a self-styled republic had its independence recognized by Putin, as well as neighboring Lugansk.

Attacks by Moscow forces have targeted Ukrainian infrastructure in these nearly two weeks of conflict.

This Tuesday (8), on the thirteenth day of conflict, an oil deposit was bombed in the city of Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine.
