A “small miracle” takes place 35 meters below one of the busiest areas of the center of Athens, Kolonaki. Behind the green-decorated protective sheets of the construction site, in one of the most emblematic areas of the center, one of the most important projects for Athens is developing. The “Kolonaki station” of Line 4 of the Athens Metro.

The construction site of AVAX at Kolonaki square station is revealed in APE-MBE. According to company officials, it is one of the 15 stations of Line 4, the largest public project currently being implemented in the country. Line 4 starts from Katehaki and passing through Zografou, Kaisariani, Kolonaki, Exarchia, Courts of Evelpidon and Kypseli reaches Galatsi and Alsos Veikou.

The X-ray of the “Kolonaki” station

Today, the excavation of the AVAX Group has reached 28 meters, while the final excavation depth will reach 35 meters. The area of the pit exceeds 2,000 square meters, while the area of the construction site is four acres. That is, the volume of excavation is equivalent to eight 10-story apartment buildings!

35 workers work in this large Kolonaki pit while the work is “supervised” from a height of 45 meters by the construction crane familiar to Kolonaki visitors.

According to AVAX, up to 500 cubic meters of soil are removed every day, while by the end of the work, 68,000 cubic meters of soil will have been removed. To date, 53,000 cubic meters have been removed. In fact, Kolonaki station will be connected by a tunnel that will pass under Lines 2 and 3, which are already in operation.

Work intensification from the first moment of delivery

After the so-called preliminary works, the mechanism of the contractor consortium got to work last year in April, in Kolonaki square. Despite the fact that the station was handed over to AVAX, ten months after the scheduled date, the lost time has almost been made up and the speed of development of the project is impressive. Appeals and other pending matters are the reason why 6 of the 15 construction sites where the same number of stations will be built have not been handed over to the consortium building the project.

The works on Line 4 are at an uninterrupted pace

The opening and construction of the tunnel is proceeding at a very satisfactory pace, as reported by the same executives. By 2026, the two state-of-the-art AVAX subways will have completed the 12.8 km of the route, which will be a breath of fresh air for densely populated areas and major traffic issues, such as Galatsi, Kypseli, Akadimias and Kolonaki.

The Metropontikas that started from Katehaki has already constructed a 2 km tunnel, 40% of the 5.1 km, which in total has to travel until the branching of Evangelismos, where it will meet with the second Metropontikas which follows an opposite course, from the Alsos Veikou towards Evangelismos.
