Almost 700,000 vehicles BMW AG is recalling cars in China due to coolant pump defects, a major setback for the German automaker, which has already been rocked by problems with other vehicles, Bloomberg reports.

BMW will recall 499,539 locally produced cars and 188,371 imported vehicles from March 1, 2025 onwards, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said today, Friday.

Defective coolant pump plugs fitted to some models can lead to corrosion or rust, which could cause short circuits and in extreme cases fires, the agency said.

Affected models include locally made 3 Series and 5 Series vehicles, as well as several imported X Series SUVs.

The recall follows a sharp drop in deliveries in China, BMW AG’s biggest market in terms of revenue. In the third quarter, shipments of BMW and Mini brand cars in China they decreased by 30%the sharpest decline in more than four years, the company reported last week.

In September, BMW issued a profit warning due to recall of 1.5 million cars worldwide related to defective braking systems supplied by Continental AG. These defects are expected to cost the automotive industry almost 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) to fix them.
