EYDAP officials stated that the cost of water from desalination reaches 1 euro per cubic meter, while today EYDAP charges 0.35 cents per cubic meter.
EYDAP is on alert, examining various scenarios for dealing with Athens’ water supply problems, in the event of prolonged drought, even though the existing reserves in the reservoirs are sufficient for four years.
According to information, the preliminary study has already progressed for the transfer of water from the two rivers that flow into the Kremasto lake, as well as the lake itself.
At the same time, discussions have begun with large electricity producers, such as PPC but also the Mytilene group and others, for construction and operation 3 or 4 desalination units since desalination requires a lot of electricity.
The one desalination unit, if the discussions with PPC proceed, can be done in the area of Lavrio.
The other two or three on his side Gulf of Corinth and along the water pipeline from the Morno in Athens.
Competent agents of EYDAP stated to APE-MPE that the the cost of water from desalination is significant and reaches 1 euro per cubic meterwhereas today EYDAP charges per cubic meter by 0.35 cents.
In any case, both solutions are relatively time-consuming and will take at least three years to work.
The same EYDAP agents emphasized that the faster and more advantageous solution at low cost is the transfer of water from the lake of Kremasta, which can have results and strengthen the network in a time earlier than all three years, if of course there are no appeals to the Council of State for environmental or other reasons with the consequence of delaying the project.
The project is relatively easy and it will of course be necessary to dig tunnels for the passage of the pipeline, but something similar has been done in the past with the transfer of water from the Evinos dam to the Mornos network.
The initial scenario envisages two tributaries of the Acheloos flowing into Lake Kremasto to be interconnected with the Mornos network.
According to EYDAP officials, all possible solutions are being considered to definitively resolve the problem in the capital’s water supply.
The final decisions will be made by the competent authority Ministry of Environment and the government.
