Shock and unanswered questions have been caused by the serious incident of mass poisoning from a leak of Carbon Monoxide in a hotel in Florina.
After a dramatic evacuation operation, 14 occupants were taken to the Hospital, in a faint and semi-conscious stateafter the gas leak.
A 48-year-old man is fighting for life
A 48-year-old man is hospitalized, intubated in the Intensive Care Unit of Mamatse Hospital, Kozani, with swelling in the brain and lungs.
His condition is described as critical.
The Business was sealed, while the Owner was arrested.
The guests left the hotel in Limnohori, Florina, escorted by the police.
Firefighters, in their attempt to extricate the 48-year-old from this room, broke the window as he was unconscious.
The 48-year-old was in the hotel with his wife for the three days.
Testimonies
According to the testimonies of other guests, the malaise started when the internal heating was activated due to low temperature.
The occupants sensed something was wrong and informed hotel officials.
As it turned out, the poisoning was caused by a carbon monoxide leak.
“9 people came to us in a semi-conscious state, they had loss of consciousness, tendency to vomit and malaise. All tests were done, oxygen was administered. About an hour ago they were all discharged“, says the Governor of the Florina Hospital, George Mantsos.
“We felt something,” said a girl, the sufferer. But he was fine,” describes a resident.
“On Friday when I came to drink coffee in the afternoon the shop smelled. Gas. And I say it smells and they tell me so and so. We put on the gas, they tell me, nothing else“, adds another.
Officials of the Ptolemaida Fire Service and police officers from Florina, proceeded to an autopsy in the hotel premises, which were sealed until the completion of the investigation.
The space had recently been renovated
The hotel was recently renovated and opened on September 13th.

The 53-year-old owner was arrested on charges of dangerous injury and negligent bodily harm.
The remaining 13 visitors who showed symptoms of poisoning, after being hospitalized as a precaution in the area’s hospitals, were discharged.
