Seismic activity in the area of ​​Mount Athos, as well as the effects of earthquakes on monumental constructions, will be studied and investigated by the interdisciplinary working group, established at the initiative of the Technical Chamber of Greece/Department of Central Macedonia (TEE/TKM).

The team is formed by the TEE/TKM, in collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Organization for Antiseismic Planning and Protection – Institute of Technical Seismology and Antiseismic Constructions (OASP – ITSAK) and the Center for the Preservation of Agiorite Heritage (Ke .D.A.K.).

“The intense seismic activity observed in the last months in the area of ​​Mount Athos makes the in-depth study of the phenomenon and the control of the monumental building inventory imperative. The TEE/TKM, as a technical advisor to the State, is always present and a pioneer in actions related to the management and response of natural challenges, as well as the protection of our cultural heritage. And in this case, we intervene in a key and targeted manner, with consistency and an interdisciplinary approach”, said the president of the TEE/TKM Steering Committee Ilias Pertzinidis.

The aim of the working group that was set up is to monitor the seismic actions in the area of ​​Mount Athos, to check the vulnerability of selected buildings against earthquakes as well as to record possible damages while formulating proposals for rehabilitation and reinforcement.

In order to achieve the first goal of the working group, the permission of the Holy Community has been secured for the installation of two accelerometers in the Holy Peninsula and, specifically, in the area of ​​Kary and in the Holy Monastery of Xenophon. The working group was established for a period of six months, but a commitment has been made to extend it if circumstances require it. Mr. Pertzinidis was appointed responsible for the monitoring, receipt and control of the good execution of the project.
