The Mixed Jury Court of Lasithi imposed an 8-year prison sentence for attempted murder with possible intent, on the 24-year-old from the village of Mesara, who shot and wounded a 30-year-old man in the head, in August 2023, while he was driving his vehicle at dawn in Moires-Tympaki road at the level of the intersection to Galia.

The 24-year-old, who stated in his apology that he did not in any way wish to injure the 30-year-old, was sentenced to an additional 1 year in prison for the offenses of carrying weapons and using weapons, while the court did not recognize the suspensive nature of the appeal.

The defendant claimed during the hearing that the two, before he shot, had argued because of the way the 30-year-old was driving his vehicle, which was ahead of the vehicle in which he was the driver.

After the altercation in the middle of the road and after they initially went in different directions, the 24-year-old claimed that the 30-year-old appeared again in his vehicle, making a U-turn in front of him and that his reaction to take out the pen gun and shoot was a result of danger he felt and anyway only to intimidate, as he claimed, the 30-year-old man.

Regarding the bloody incident, the police authorities had arrived at the scene, with the information that it was a traffic accident. The 30-year-old was taken to the local Health Center, where after tests it was found that he had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately transferred to the Venizelio Hospital of Heraklion and was in the ICU for days, while after a series of operations, he was discharged from the hospital, after weeks, without the doctors being able to remove – due to the danger – the bullet from his head .

The 30-year-old still faces problems in his daily life from the injury, while his family, at the beginning of the hearing, stated that they do not repeat the charge to be supported, wishing to focus on the issues related to the rehabilitation of their child.
