The country is in the “eye” of bad weather Bora. At 6.00 on Saturday afternoon, a 112 message was sent to Attica as strong storms are expected from late at night until the early hours of the morning.

Lemnos

The residents of Lemnos are called to evacuate the settlement of Kontias by calling 112 due to the overflow of the dam and are asked to move to Myrina.

Lemnos

Earlier, the 57-year-old man who was wanted by his family was found dead by men of the Fire Service, as he had not shown signs of life since the onset of the bad weather on Saturday morning.

The man abandoned his vehicle when he became trapped by the water in a flooded stream. The unfortunate farmer, in his attempt to connect his car to his tractor, in order to detach it from the mud, was swept away by the rushing waters.

Rhodes

Many problems are recorded at this time on the roads of the city of Rhodes but also in the villages due to the rainfall that has been occurring since around 11 in the morning. At 17.35 in the afternoon a message was sent from 112 so that the residents avoid their movements.

Rhodes

“Fire” has taken over the call center of the Fire Service, staff and vehicles of which have been called to extricate two drivers from their vehicles in the areas of Asgourou and Filerimou, while several phone calls are made by our fellow citizens, calling for help to pump water.

Several roads in the city have been flooded, while the Ixia road has also turned into a river, resulting in a traffic jam and cars being immobilized in the stream from Ialyssos to Rhodes.

The heavy rainfall has caused similar problems in the villages of Rhodes, mainly on the western side, where some roads have been flooded.

Marble

The heavy rain that fell in Volos on Saturday afternoon created serious problems at the city’s Hospital.

According to thenewspaper, since the early afternoon the central corridor of the Pathology clinic on the 7th floor of “Achillopouleion” has been filled with water from the storm. The staff on the shift collect the amounts of water that pass through the ceiling in buckets, in order not to flood the interior of the clinic.

Problems due to rainfall are not the first time the Hospital has seen them. And in previous intense storms, clinics and facilities of “Achillopouleio” have suffered damage due to flooding.

Macedonia and Thessaly

An alarm was sounded at noon on Saturday in central Macedonia and Thessaly, with Civil Protection through 112 warning of severe weather phenomena.

“Warning for very strong rains and storms as well as gale force winds in the regions of Central Macedonia and Thessaly from today early evening 30/11 until tomorrow evening 01/12. Avoid commuting. Follow the instructions of the Authorities” is written in the message.

Services are on high alert

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, has informed the competent government agencies involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, so that they are on increased civil protection readiness, in order to face directly the effects of the occurrence of intense weather phenomena.

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection recommends that citizens be especially careful, ensuring that self-protection measures are taken against risks arising from the occurrence of severe weather phenomena.

In particular, in areas where heavy rainfall, storms or gale-force winds are expected to occur:

To secure objects which, if carried away by severe weather conditions, may cause damage or injury.
Make sure that the gutters and downspouts of the houses are not blocked and are working properly.
Avoid crossing torrents and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainfall, but also for several hours after the end of their event
Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).
Take shelter immediately during a hailstorm. Take refuge in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until they are sure the storm has passed. Hail can be very dangerous for animals too.
Avoid passing under large trees, under posted signs and in general areas where light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass, etc.) can become detached and fall to the ground (e.g. under balconies) .
To faithfully follow the instructions of the local authorities, such as Traffic, etc.
In areas with intense lightning activity:

If you are at home

• Do not hold electrical appliances or the telephone as lightning can pass through the wires. Disconnect the TV sets from the antenna and the power supply.

• Avoid touching plumbing pipes (kitchen, bathroom) as they are good conductors of electricity.

If you are in the car

• Park it on the side of the road and away from trees that might fall on it.

• Stay inside and turn on your stop warning lights (emergency lights) until the storm clears.

• Close the windows and do not touch metal objects.

• Avoid flooded roads.

If you are outdoors

• Take refuge in a building or car or sit on the ground immediately without lying down.

• Take shelter under solid branches of low trees if you are in the woods.

• Never take shelter under a tall tree in an open area.

• Avoid low-lying land for the risk of flooding.

• Do not stand next to utility poles, power lines, telephone lines and fences.

• Do not approach metal objects (eg cars, bicycles, camping equipment, etc.).

• Move away from rivers, lakes or other bodies of water.

• If you are in the sea, get out immediately.

• If you are isolated on a flat surface and feel your hair stand on end (indicating that lightning is about to strike), take a deep seat with your head between your legs (to minimize your body surface and contact with ground) by throwing the metal objects you have on you.

In areas where snowfall and frost are expected:

If they are going to travel by car:

To be informed about the weather and the condition of the road network
Have skid chains on their vehicle and a full tank of fuel
To travel, if necessary, preferably during the day preferring the main roads
To inform their relatives about the route they are going to follow
Change their travel schedule to avoid peak weather conditions
To faithfully follow the instructions of the local authorities, such as Traffic, etc.
If moving on foot:

Dress in several layers of light clothing rather than a heavy garment and wear appropriate footwear to avoid slippery injuries
To avoid unnecessary movements during the peak of the phenomena (heavy snowfall, freezing conditions)
