Commercial trains start running at midnight – Athens – Thessaloniki routes are expected as normal from tomorrow Wednesday
The cleaning work for the restoration of the railway network in the Tempe tunnel continues at an intensive pace by OSE crews, with the aim of giving traffic a track for commercial trains from midnight.
According to the leaders of the OSE, the single line for commercial trains is expected to open after midnight, if no extreme weather phenomenon occurs, while from tomorrow Wednesday, the goal is to carry out normal routes on the Athens-Thessaloniki railway axis. They are currently working on plugging 50 manholes from a large drain that has been placed on a 2 km long train platform where haulable materials and rubble have been spread.
Regarding the current situation in the tunnel and the railway network of Tempe after the passing of the bad weather Bora, Panagiotis Terezakis, CEO of OSE, speaking said:
“Most of the water in the tunnel is now gone. Now crews have begun removing the mud and hauling materials to begin cleaning the line. Afterwards, they should be washed with hoses, with water, so that the tunnel can be cleaned before it can be given back to traffic. Our plan is that by evening they can clear one of the two tracks so we can restore single lane traffic. Mainly the commercial ones should go through first, because a problem has arisen at both ends, in Athens and in Thessaloniki, due to a large number of loads that need to be processed. In the coming night we will also complete the cleaning on the second track with the aim of being able to give traffic to both tracks normally and fully restore traffic tomorrow morning».
