The three Turks, of Kurdish origin, were caught after a major police operation – They claimed they had the weapons for self-defense
The third Turk, of Kurdish origin, who was arrested yesterday afternoon in Thessaloniki for weapons possession, following a major police operation in an apartment on Vas. Olga.
The operation, which was carried out by the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of Northern Greece with the assistance of an echelon of the EYP, had been triggered by the arrest – 24 hours earlier – of two more Turks, also of Kurdish origin, for weapons possession.
The three men were walking in the center of Thessaloniki and in a random police check two of them (32 and 25 years old) were arrested, although they tried to hide in a beauty salon, while the third escaped.
Two pistols, a clock and a canik, 25 cartridges (and an extra one in the chamber) were found in the possession of the first two (who are holders of temporary identity cards for political asylum seekers). They were referred to trial with the automatic procedure and are detained administratively, while, they claimed that they possessed the weapons for self-defense.
The search in Vas’s apartment followed. Olgas, where the person who had escaped was also found, a 46-year-old man.
In the same area, a pistol with a magazine containing 17 cartridges was found carefully hidden, as stated in an announcement from the Headquarters of the Hellenic Army.
In addition to the pistols, officers seized 4 mobile phones, a tablet and a number of executive SIM cards (centre photo).
All confiscated items are examined in the laboratory to determine any involvement of the arrested in other illegal acts.
