Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards Winners – Wildlife as you’ve never seen it before!
Wildlife in its funniest moments was highlighted again this year by the “Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards”, with the big winner being a squirrel “stuck” in a tree!
Among the photos that stood out is one frog who has his head in a bubble and one sea bream who chases one bald eagle but also the owls in love.
But Milko Marchetti’s click with the squirrel was the one that got the most laughs, and so he won first prize out of 9,000 entries! In fact, according to CNN, it was the largest number of entries in the 10-year history of the photo contest.

Marchetti’s photograph captured the moment when one red squirrel enters the hiding place of, where it is on the trunk of a tree, with his legs at right angles to his torso so he looks like he’s stuck in the hole. “I’ve taken many pictures of squirrels, at many stops over the years in Italy, but this one seemed really funny and such a strange position,” the photographer said.
“Every time I show this image at my nature seminars at my local photography club, the audience always bursts into laughter, so I had to register it!” he noted.
Stefan Maier, Nikon Europe’s senior general manager of marketing, said excited with him winnersaying that his image “perfectly captures the playful and unpredictable moments that make nature so charming”.
Among the winners was Kingston Tam, who won the ‘Nikon Young Photographer Award’ for capturing a smiling frog. Accordingly, a 10-year-old, Flynn Thaitanunde-Lobb, became the youngest category winner with four images showing a squirrel rocking!
