Municipality of Thessaloniki: Rooms for Ukrainian refugees and over 100 tons of humanitarian aid

More than 100 tonnes of humanitarian aid, food, medicine and clothing have already been collected and shipped by the town hall of Thessaloniki in Ukraineas announced tonight by the mayor of Thessaloniki from the podium of the municipal council, Konstantinos Zervas.

“From the first moment, the municipality of Thessaloniki has been helping tested Ukrainian people. I was very emotional when I saw some of the boxes with a sticker of Alexander the Great arriving in Kyiv and being broadcast on local news bulletins. “Along with our arguments for peace and for the cessation of hostilities, we must support the people who are being tested and thank all the citizens and businesses that brought food, medicine, clothes,” Mr Zervas said.

At the same time, he announced that in addition to humanitarian aid, the administration is taking care to be able to accommodate in a large number of apartments throughout the city, refugees who will come from Ukraine. “We do not discriminate, whatever the origin of the refugee,” the mayor said.

Earlier, the Thessaloniki City Council proceeded to issue a resolution condemning the Russian invasion in Ukraine and expressing support for the afflicted Ukrainian people and the Greek expatriates.

In addition to the condemnation of the war, Mr. Zervas in his statement stated that this year’s commemoration march for the victims of the Holocaust entitled “Never Again, Thessaloniki – ‘Auschwitz 79 years since the departure of the first train” on Sunday, March 20 , will be held for the first time in the presence of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
