The formation of a modern, efficient and fully accessible system of care for the elderly, people with disabilities, children and the chronically ill is provided for in National Long-Term Care Strategywhich was presented yesterday at a special event, at the Benaki Museum, by the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Sofia Zacharakis and the General Secretary of Social Solidarity and Combating Poverty, Prodromos Pyrros, who is also the National Coordinator for Long-Term Care issues.

The Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Sofia Zaharakis, in her speech emphasized that “with the National Long-Term Care Strategy, we seek to strengthen our cohesion and offer care to the people who need it, in a modern, humane and essential way.

Long-term care is not just about the elderly. It concerns every person who needs support during their life such as:

  • Chronic patients, who deserve quality of life and autonomy.
  • People with disabilities, who need to be supported to reach their full potential.
  • Children and their families who need access to care and support services.

Our strategy has a clear goal:

  • Bringing Long Term Care to the community
  • To improve the accessibility of services, the availability of structures and the quality of services in every corner of our country:
  1. In cities and islands,
  2. In the most remote villages and mountainous areas.

In this effort, the collaboration with the Ministry of Health is excellent. Together we design an integrated framework of long-term care that will combine high-level health services and welfare support. But also with other co-competent Ministries, such as the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of the National Economy, we have started with a specialized working group since February to work on the elaboration of this framework”.
