The opinion of the Personal Data Protection Authority on the placement of cameras by the Greek Police
The Personal Data Protection Authority approved the placement by the Hellenic Police of cameras on the streets to prevent and suppress criminal acts as well as traffic management for the needs of the General Police Directorate of Attica.
In more detail, the Authority decided (4/2024 opinion) that the relevant study forwarded by EL.AS. for the placement of cameras, “adequately addresses the risks posed to the protected legal interests of data subjects and provides advice on specific issues”.
Furthermore, the Authority recommends:
a) enhancing transparency by using multi-level information provision and utilizing modern visualization technologies of the monitored areas and at the same time posting the full text of the decision to install the systems
b) provision of sufficient resources to the Data Protection Officer of EL.AS.
c) definition of minimum specifications of video/audio recording devices and
d) specification of the anonymization process when using data for educational purposes.
