Two Greeks, aged 50 and 39, were arrested on Thursday, accused of repeated thefts, damage to foreign property and violation of the law on protection of antiquities and cultural heritage.

In the context of an investigation of distinguished thefts committed from a sculpture workshop, which has been recognized as a monument by the Ministry of Culture as it is an example of the architecture of an industrial complex of the first half of the 20th century, police officers of the Nea Ionia Security Department put the workshop under surveillance for identification and identification of the perpetrator.

As it became known from ELAS, on Thursday morning the police found the 2 defendants inside the laboratory at the time they were removing works of art. At the sight of the policemen, the accused tried to escape, but the policemen, with the assistance of the ‘Immediate Action’ policemen, immobilized them and took them to the Nea Ionia Security Department.

In the context of the preliminary investigation, it was established that the 2 defendants during the last week carried out successive thefts of works of art with the estimated value of the stolen works being calculated at a sum of money of more than 300,000 euros, while during the removal of the objects they caused damage to both the building and in other works of art.

During their arrest, burglary tools were found and confiscated in their possession as well as a number of works of art such as:

– effigy of a human head with a visored hat (Work of Solon),

– human effigy of small size with hands as branches (Shaman Project),

– effigy of a female figure,

– bronze insect figurine with tesserae,

– 4 bronze effigies of leaf and foot,

– 2 brass pipes,

– 22 brass plates,

– 7 copper rings.

The arrested were taken to the competent Prosecutor.
