The Company responds to the mayor of Alimos who complained to SKAI that the beach was filled with sewage as the EYDAP sewage pipe was flooded
EYDAP “has no responsibility for the flooding phenomena at the junction of Kanari Street and Posidonos Avenue in Alimos because it has no responsibility for the rains”, the Company emphasizes in its statement, responding to related complaints by the mayor of Alimos, Andreas Kondylis, to SKAI.
He notes, among other things, that “the sewerage network is overloaded in cases of heavy rainfall, resulting in the opening of the sewerage network lid at the specific point” and this is because there have been 7,000 illegal rainwater connections to the sewerage pipeline by private individuals in the wider area.
EYDAP’s announcement in detail:
“Following publications about the fault of EYDAP for the flooding phenomenon at the Kanari junction with Poseidonos Avenue, it is clarified that EYDAP has no responsibility for the rains.
However, the drainage network is overloaded in cases of heavy rainfall, resulting in the opening of the lid of the drainage network at that point.
The reason why this is happening is that from Varkiza to Alimos there have been illegal rainwater connections by private individuals to the sewerage pipeline, for which EYDAP takes the appropriate measures according to its Operating Regulations, which can reach up to interruption of property water supply. According to EYDAP estimates, there are 7,000 properties in the area that have illegally channeled rainwater into the sewer, significantly increasing the volume of inflows into the sewer network when it rains. The problem is magnified excessively during heavy rainfall.
The mobilization of EYDAP was immediate with the Company’s crews operating at the site from 3.00 am, restoring the smooth operation of the system and cleaning the site with washing.
In order to deal with the problem in the long term, EYDAP will complete a study, which has already been assigned, within the first quarter of 2025, for the construction of a new relief pipeline in the area and the relevant project will be assigned.”
